Did Velvet Really Just Make A Comeback?

Ladies, scroll to the bottom to see some of my favorites. Men, there are a few pieces for you in here too, look at the "Menswear" section.

I don't know about you, but every time I hear someone talk about velvet I immediately think of all the episodes of Seinfeld where George Costanza goes on and on about his love for velvet - he even went as far as buying velvet furniture and a velvet jumpsuit!

Don't worry, I'm not suggesting that everyone go and drape themselves with velvet, but I assure you that this message is Costanza approved!

Lately, velvet has been used to accent mid-century modern interior design and at first I didn't know how I felt about it, but I've grown to really love it! It really looks great, and if you don't believe me go and check out French By Design's blog post "20 Interiors That Prove The Velvet Trend Is Going Strong" and you'll see just how well it works!

As of late, velvet has peaked in the fashion industry as well. Velvet was initially a material I saw as purely retro and not a material that would be able to make a strong comeback - however, 2016 has proved me wrong. Velvet has returned to menswear as well as womenswear in dusty pink, navy blue, black, grey, variations of cream and a holiday red. H&M has a few velvet pieces this winter that are so tastefully made that I had to use them for this blog! A few of them are actually on my personal shopping list for the season.

Menswear

Men, I'm going to be completely honest with you and say the only pure velvet pieces I could get behind in menswear are the velvet blazer and some of the velvet shoes. So first, I think that velvet blazers are just the coolest thing. There is an old classic vibe I get when I see a man wear a velvet suit coat. I really love H&M's navy blue velvet blazer because it is modern and it leaves room for creativity with its black, formal, peak lapels and jetted pockets.

When it comes to shoes there are certain velvet loafers that are so bright or wild that they could only really be worn once or twice to a special event and then maybe sold afterward. So, I picked out four velvet shoes that are minimal enough to add to your rotation of loafers. I apologize as some of the shoes are a little expensive.

Another way that menswear designers have implemented the velvet trend is on graphic tees or sweatshirts. I personally like the light grey crewneck from H&M pictured on the left (below). It has a super minimal design, and it is not too youthful. The dark grey crewneck, to the right, is also from H&M and it has a more playful design. I like the rustic, abstract and artistic streetwear-like vibes that this piece gives me - hope you were able to follow that explanation. Like the other crewneck, this one is not too youthful, even with its more casual appearance.  This would also be a great piece for layering. Womenswear

Ladies, I went a little nuts when I looked at H&M's Velvet selection! I'm so obsessed with how sexy and classy velvet can look, and I can't wait to get my hands on some of these pieces! Details alone, such as unique fabrics, can make an outfit appear to be very fashionable. Implementing one velvet piece into a simple outfit can make it come to life. Speaking of details, there is a trend that I wouldn't have been able to create myself - because, well I just wouldn't think it would work  - and it is velvet and lace. H&M had a few velvet and lace pieces that I thought I would include just to show you how great it actually looks together! The following pieces are "faux velvet" or velour, but they still look very authentic. I personally would wear all three.

What's really cool about material trends is that it gives us more room for creativity within our wardrobes. The velvet trend gives us a new material to layer with this winter, and it can give a simple outfit a very edgy or classy twist! Oh, and they didn't stop after clothes for women either - there are velvet accessories and shoes. I've selected a variety of velvet shoes from ASOS's website that I really liked.

So, whether you dress it up, or dress it down, velvet will be fun to play with in the following months.  I've attached the rest of my H&M favorites below! Unfortunately some of these pieces have sold out since I found them online, but I still thought these were gorgeous pieces that could inspire your winter shopping sprees! Please comment and let me know if you make a purchase. I would love to see what you all put together!
