Favorite Spring Fashion Trends of 2018

Yesterday was the first day of spring and I am so excited! I had to bring out the pink skinny trousers to celebrate. As you may or may not know, I live in the Chicagoland area, and even though spring is supposed to be here, it’s still 30°F and we are expecting snow this weekend. Yeah. Let that sink in.

I have always loved spring fashion! It is my second favorite fashion season next to fall which is my ultimate favorite. Every year, even as trends change, winter will always be a competition of who has the nicest coat, fall will always be cozy sweater season, summer will always be the time to wear white, bright colors, or a bikini, and spring will always be the light, pastel, floral and fun fashion season.

I subscribe to a lot of magazines and follow lots of fashion influencers and gain all my trendy knowledge from these experts. This year I’ve been behind, but I read my most recent magazines to get a grasp of what was going on and it looks a lot like 2017. Here are some of my favorite trends for this spring of 2018!

1. Oversize Menswear

Whether you are tall or short, plus size or tiny, oversize menswear is something you have got to try. I love going to the thrift store and finding men’s shirts that I can pull off. There’s something amazing about the fact that women can not only look amazing in our own clothes, but wear men’s clothes better than them! This trend started last year with the backwards blouse look that lots of fashion influencers bravely wore. I personally loved it and styled one of my button down shirts backwards last spring. Glamour’s March 2018 magazine has a whole page on oversize menswear trend in their “Shop the Trends” section and it’s really menswear inspired women’s clothes.

If all you can picture right now is a girl wearing an oversize men’s button down as a dress with sneakers, allow me give you some more examples. Blazers - you will probably see a variety of oversize blazers dressed up or dressed down. You’ll see more trench coats and oversize coats, and slowly clothes are probably going to get bigger and bigger.  So stay tuned for a lot of tunics, slacks, loafers, and oversize men’s inspired clothing on Instagram and as you shop the web.

2. Strappy/Lace up Heels

My mom gave me my first pair of strappy heels in high school - which my close friends will remember as my “stripper shoes” since that’s what they always called them 🙄. I’ve always been obsessed with this look though. There’s something so cool about tying your heels before you leave the house. The only thing I don’t like about these shoes is you have to know to how tie them perfectly so that as you sit and stand they don’t untie and fall like spaghetti - idk spaghetti is the first thing that came to mind and it just felt right.

This trend is complimentary to women of all body types. These shoes won’t cut your circulation unless you allow them to. I can’t wait to get a new pair!!

 3. Ruffles

Yes. Ruffles returned again. I told you it’s a lot like last year! I was so obsessed with all the crazy things designers did to blouses and dresses in 2016 and 2017 and I can’t wait to see what they do to them this year. Ruffles are such a feminine detail. Although men can pull them off, I still believe they are truly a feminine touch to any garment they decorate. Vogue’s March 2018 has a ruffles spread that is everything to me!

From blouses to dresses, ruffles add so much sass to any outfit. I have a white blouse from Zara that has ruffles and cutouts and I cannot wait to wear it this spring, it may just become my go-to when I want to look cute but I’m in a rush. Ruffles really work on everyone - but find the style that you like the most on you and make it beautiful!

4. Pattern Mix and Match

I know, I know, not a new trend. But this is something that designers have been pushing for years. Men seemed to pick it up but women were still playing it safe with mixing patterns. Now, however, it is everywhere. This is the year women regain our confidence and stop caring about what other people think. We are really working our way to the top.

Expect to see a lot more women pushing limits and confidently mixing patterns like a boss. This trend is so playful and it can be outside of a lot of people’s comfort zones, but I say go for it! Be sure to mix big patterns with small patterns - that is the key.

5. CONFIDENCE

I wanted to wrap up this blog on an inspirational note! No matter what trends come and go, wear your skin and your body with pride and confidence. You are unique and wonderfully made. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Trends that I’m not a fan of this Spring but deserved honorable mention: bermuda shorts and glitter.

Happy Spring 🌼
